What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium screw that replaces the root of a missing tooth. During a minor surgical procedure, your dentist places the implant into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once healed, it’s topped with a custom restoration—like a crown—to look, feel, and function just like a natural tooth.

Choosing dental implants is a significant decision. If you’re considering one but aren’t sure what to expect, we’re here to guide you through every step so you can make a confident, informed choice about your care.

Why You Might Need Dental Implants

Your natural teeth play a vital role in supporting the structure of your smile and helping you eat and speak comfortably. When a tooth is lost, it can trigger more than just a gap in your smile—it can lead to shifting teeth, bite problems, and a higher risk of oral health issues.

One of the most serious long-term effects of tooth loss is bone resorption. Without tooth roots to stimulate the jawbone, your body begins to break down and absorb the bone tissue, leading to a sunken appearance in the cheeks, wrinkles around the mouth, and a shortened jawline.

Dental implants are the closest replacement to natural teeth. They preserve jawbone health, maintain facial structure, and help restore normal function. By replacing missing teeth with implants, you can protect your oral health and improve your overall quality of life.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Losing a tooth can impact more than just your appearance—it can affect your confidence, your ability to eat comfortably, and your overall oral health. Dental implants offer a long-term solution that restores both function and aesthetics, helping you look and feel like yourself again.

  • Restore Your Natural Appearance: Dental implants are custom-made to match your smile in size, shape, and colour. They blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth, providing a permanent solution that looks and feels just right.
  • Feel Confident and Comfortable: Once placed, the titanium implant fuses with your jawbone, creating a strong and stable foundation. Whether it supports a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture, your new tooth won’t shift or slip—giving you the freedom to eat, laugh, and speak without worry.
  • Support Bone Health: Implants help prevent bone loss by stimulating the jawbone, just like natural tooth roots. This promotes healthy bone growth and helps maintain the structure of your face over time.

Dental implants are a durable, long-lasting solution that can restore your quality of life for decades—when paired with proper care and routine dental visits.

Dental Implant Restorations

While the implant itself is hidden beneath the gums, the visible part—the restoration—is what gives you the look and function of a natural tooth. There are several types of dental implant restorations, each designed to meet different needs:

  • Dental Crown: The most common option for a single missing tooth. A custom-made crown is securely attached to the implant, restoring your bite and appearance with a natural-looking result.
  • Dental Bridge: Used to replace multiple missing teeth in a row. A bridge can be supported by one or more implants, making it a strong and stable alternative to traditional bridges. A full arch bridge may be attached to four or more implants for a complete upper or lower restoration.
  • Implant-Supported Denture: For patients with removable dentures, implants can provide added stability. The denture securely clips onto two or more implants, reducing movement and improving comfort while eating or speaking.

How It Feels

While the idea of having a metal implant placed in your jawbone may sound intimidating, the procedure is much more comfortable than most people expect.

We use a local anaesthetic to completely numb the area, so you won’t feel pain during the surgery. Thanks to modern dental technology, implant placement is quick, precise, and minimally invasive—often completed in under 30 minutes.

Many patients say the most uncomfortable part is simply holding their mouth open. Some even report feeling relaxed or sleepy during the procedure.

Mild swelling, discomfort, or bruising may occur in the hours following surgery, but this is normal and typically easy to manage. We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions to help you stay comfortable as the anaesthetic wears off. Most patients begin feeling much better within a week.

It’s also reassuring to know that dental implants have a success rate of nearly 95%—making them one of the safest and most predictable procedures in modern dentistry.

What to Expect on Your Dental Implant Journey

The process of getting a dental implant is often more comfortable and straightforward than most patients anticipate.

Here’s a step-by-step look at what your treatment journey will involve:

Assessment and Planning

Your journey begins with a thorough consultation. We’ll take X-rays and a 3D cone-beam CT scan to assess your jawbone and determine if dental implants are right for you. Digital scans or impressions of your teeth will help us plan the ideal placement and angulation of your implant.

Placing the Implant

On the day of your procedure, we’ll numb the area with a local anaesthetic to ensure you’re completely comfortable. A small opening is made in the gum and bone, and the titanium implant post is gently placed. Sutures may be used, depending on your specific case.

Healing and Final Restoration

You’ll be sent home to heal while the implant fuses naturally with the bone—a process called osseointegration. After a few months, you’ll return for your final appointment, where we’ll securely place your custom dental restoration. You’ll leave with a strong, natural-looking tooth that feels and functions like your own.

Contact us today

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Cost of Dental Implants in Winnipeg

In Winnipeg, a single dental implant typically costs between $3,000 and $6,000+. Full-mouth reconstruction with implants can range from $6,000 to over $60,000, while a full set of implant-supported dentures averages around $30,000.

Because implant treatment is highly individualized, no dental practice can give an exact quote over the phone. An in-person consultation is essential to assess your needs and provide accurate options.

What Affects the Cost of Dental Implant Surgery? Several factors influence pricing:

  • Type and number of implants needed
  • Materials used for the implants and restorations
  • Experience and time of the dental team
  • Complexity and location of the procedure
  • Post-operative care and follow-up support

We’re here for you at every step. Once we evaluate your oral health and goals, we’ll provide a clear, personalized quote and treatment plan.

Looking for Alternatives to Dental Implants?

  • Dental bridges are a reliable solution for replacing one to three missing teeth.
  • Removable dentures or prosthetics are commonly used when multiple or all teeth are missing.

While dental implants do come with a higher upfront cost, they provide unmatched stability, comfort, and long-term value. They’re designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth—and with proper care, they can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Although dental implants use metal screws for support, they’re hidden beneath your gums and covered with lifelike restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Dentures and implants serve different purposes. Dentures rest on your gums, while implants are fixed below the gum line to strengthen your bite. Both have unique advantages and drawbacks, so a personal consultation will help determine which option best suits your needs.

Generally, you must be an adult in good oral health with a strong jawbone and healthy gums. If you’re unsure about your candidacy, contact us—we can discuss treatment options to restore your oral health and determine the best tooth-replacement solution for you.

Absolutely! Your implant restoration—whether it’s a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture—is custom-made to match the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth, ensuring a beautiful, cohesive smile.

Modern techniques and effective local anaesthesia help ensure that the procedure is comfortable, with most patients experiencing little to no pain during the surgery. Aftercare instructions will guide you in managing any mild discomfort afterward.

Many patients return to work the day after surgery. We’ll review your treatment plan and post-operative care instructions with you, so you’ll know if additional recovery time is needed.

Routine maintenance is key to long-term success. We usually recommend a checkup every six months, but this may vary depending on your individual needs.

Treat your implants as you would your natural teeth—with regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings during your routine dental visits. Always let us know if you notice any issues.

No, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance.
